Leg 1 Wrap Up – Bogota

By Jordan and Deena Fischer (@jordanfischer) Leg 1 Wrap Up – Bogota We happily returned to Bogota a few days before our flight to Miami to spend more time with our new friends. Arriving back in Bogota after six weeks spent in other parts of the continent felt surprisingly homelike. We were to stay at Carlos and Marcela’s place, and already had plans to have lunch with Cristina. The day after we arrived there was …

Cuzco and the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu

By Jordan and Deena Fischer (@jordanfischer) Please note: this post is long.   We spent three days in Cuzco to acclimate to the high altitude in advance of our five day Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu. Cuzco is the third largest city in Peru, and a beautiful colonial town complete with numerous churches, narrow cobblestone streets, and preserved Incan sites. Cuzco has more good Western-style restaurants than any other city we’ve been to. Not surprisingly, …

Arequipa, Peru

By Jordan and Deena Fischer (@jordanfischer) Hoping to see more of Peru, we decided to travel to Arequipa by bus, which required two back-to-back 15+ hour trips. The first bus, from Mancora to Lima, was 17 hours, more than half of which was through the night. The seats on overnight buses are big and comfy, so sleeping is easy. We arrived in Lima late morning, stayed for lunch (and a manicure) then promptly boarded another …

Mancora, Peru

By Jordan and Deena Fischer (@jordanfischer) We found ourselves back in Guayaquil yet again for a third time, this time just for a few hours. We booked an overnight bus from Ecuador south across the border to the surf town of Mancora, Peru, on the PanAmerican Highway. We left Guayaquil around midnight and quickly fell asleep on the bus.  An hour or so into the ride we were woken up and offered ham sandwiches. After …

Galapagos Islands, part 2 (5 more days)

By Jordan and Deena Fischer (@jordanfischer) Well, changing our flight allowed us to spend an additional five days between two additional islands: Isabela, the largest and youngest of them all at around 700,000 years old, and San Cristobal, the capital. Our cruise on the Daphne left us on Santa Cruz island. The couple from Amsterdam, Anniek and Matthjeis, had plans to visit Isabela the day after the cruise, so we joined them and agreed to …

Galapagos Islands, part 1

By Jordan and Deena Fischer (@jordanfischer) Flying to the Galapagos from mainland Ecuador is kind of like travelling internationally. Security agents meticulously check baggage for seeds, fruit, and other foreign plants that you may have inadvertently (or not) tried to bring with you. You have to stand in line to pay entrance fees. They run a pretty tight ship. While waiting in line we met a proud and sweet Ecuadorean man, George, and his wife. …

Guayaquil, Montañita, Guayaquil

By Jordan and Deena Fischer (@jordanfischer) We spent the night in Santa Marta and headed out on a morning flight to Guayaquil, Ecuador´s largest city. As this was an international flight, the desk agent at the Santa Marta airport was concerned we didn’t have printed documentation of our return flight to the States. So he invited us to sit at his station and use his computer and printer to find and print copy of our …

Santa Marta, Taganga, & Tayrona Park

By Jordan and Deena Fischer (@jordanfischer) From Cartagena, we traveled by air conditioned (important foreshadowing) bus to Santa Marta, which is about 4 hours NE. The driver was a champion.  He honked at everyone, stopped for no one, and made stops to drop off assorted packages along the way. We passed Barranquilla, a large city on the Caribbean coast known for shipping and its large soccer stadium. On the road we saw a man demolitioning an entire …

Cartagena de Indias

By Jordan and Deena Fischer (@jordanfischer) We arrived in Cartagena and headed to our home for the next few nights, Casa Marco Polo.  First, it must be said that we highly recommend this beautiful 450 year old treasure in the heart of the old walled city. Second, we love Marco, he runs the place. Marco is a cumbia musician and lives in the tiny laundry room of the casa. He seems to enjoy his life. …

The Farm

By Jordan and Deena Fischer (@jordanfischer) Friday afternoon we had an interesting journey to Cristina´s family farm. Cristina’s friend Jamie, a taxi driver, drove us. It seemed the entire population of 8 million was trying to get out of Bogota by car, bus, bike, or foot. At one point about four hours into our trip the traffic came to a complete standstill and we sat for about 35 minutes. We got out of the car …
